Abstrak

Every human is given a life span as a limit to their period of existence, with varying amounts for each individual, which we then refer to as age, extending from birth to death. No one knows the end of this life span, which we refer to as death. This creates a sense of uncertainty, causing many to hope for a long life. Therefore, they pray and ask others to pray for a long life. But can such a prayer actually extend someone's life? And what is the ruling on praying for a long life?

This discussion will present the mystery of life span and death, the meaning of extending life, the opinions and refutations of those who believe that life can be extended, the opinions and refutations of those who believe that life cannot be extended, and the ruling on praying for a long life.

In discussing this issue, this study is compiled by gathering the opinions of scholars along with their respective evidence and arguments. After that, a comparison is made between these opinions by critically and deeply analyzing each piece of evidence and argument presented.

From the results of a comprehensive review, a long life can mean blessings or the extension of biological life or cherished memories after death. Life does not change in the knowledge of Allah, but it can change or remain the same in the knowledge of Angels or humans. Praying for a long life is not prohibited, but praying for protection from the torment of the grave and hellfire is far better. And when praying for worldly matters, the prayer should be complemented with requests for goodness, obedience, righteousness, or similar things.
